Rock Art

I have been painting rocks for several years now. I pick them up any where I see them, but the majority of them I pick up along the Salt River. I like to go early in the morning and enjoy the sound of the birds and the rushing water while I walk along the banks looking at all the rocks.

When I pick up a rock I just know what it wants to be. Most of the rocks I see work well for different animals. Some rocks have very unique shapes and are harder to find. I have painted boots, shoes, feet, hands, fingers, rubber duckies, a Bible, a bee skep, a large hen and many other things on rocks.

In the beginning it was actually harder to paint on a rock because it is already a 3 dimensional object. I was used to painting on a flat surface and making the flat object look 3D and in the beginning it was hard to wrap my brain around the idea of painting a 3D image on a 3D object.

All rock art is painted with an outdoor acrylic paint which contains UV light inhibitors to minimize fading. For more protection from the elements they are sprayed with 3 coats of a clear sealer. I recommend that about once a year you rinse them off and renew the sealer. I use the Krylon clear Matte Finish.
